DF-051   SCHNITZLER & KIRSCHBAUM (S&K) MODEL 1840 HEAVY CAVALRY
SABRE. SCARCE 1ST CONTRACT

At 1st glance this sword appears to be just a regular S&K Cavalry sabre, but upon close examination of the
markings there is a crown RC, and a crown D, on the blade back. This denotes a first contract 1840 cavalry
sabre. This sword is part of a group that were purchased in the first contract of 1840. Sword is in good
condition, with dark blade, with a nice aged patina brass guard and pommel cap. 100% brass wire remaining,
and about 75% leather wrap remaining. Scabbard is dark with light speckled pitting. Pitting on drag from
where it probably sat in a barn or cellar. Original leather throat washer remains intact. Fresh out of a yard sale
in Jacksonville, Florida.
This musket is a N. Starr dated 1838 contract musket. Identified as a Confederate alteration by the 2 faceted brazed
bolster. The plugged hole in the bolster is clearly visible. A number of these smooth bore flintlock muskets were in
southern arsenals and with the rush to war were quickly converted to percussion. This one bears characteristics of
those altered by S.C. Robinson. Mottled gray patina with sharp marks through out lock, barrel, and hammer.
Overall condition of the wood is nice with a few chips out of the ramrod channel near the 3rd barrel band. Original
inspectors mark is still visible in the stock. Appears to have a replaced ramrod. A reasonably priced Confederate
musket.
DF-050  CONFEDERATE NAVAL SWORD WITHOUT SCABBARD

Pioneer Collector William Albaugh originally thought this cutlass may have been a product of The Union Car
Works in Portsmouth ,Virginia. Now there is some thought that these could have possibly been manufactured by
the Naval Iron Works in Columbus Georgia.Columbus was a major supplier of uniforms and equipment to the
Confederacy. The Sword is in very good condition , nice wood and iron with the blade missing the very tip,
broken at some point over the years. Overall length is 23 5/8 inches with no scabbard.
