This is absolutely the best and most beautiful carved Confederate Canteen I have ever held in my hands. Carved on one side is PORT HUDSON JULY 3, 1863 V. MOUNTFORT in a federal shield with nice scroll work and patriotic motifs. The opposite side has an Eagle, Cannons and American Flag. The carving at one time was highlighted with gold gilt paint which mostly remains. Vincent Mountfort from Bowdoin, Maine enlisted on October, 13 1862 in the 24th Maine Infantry rising to the rank of captain. The 24th Maine was a 9 month regiment and was present at the siege of Port Hudson. Upon expiration of his 9 months service Mountfort reenlisted in the 1st. Maine Cavalry and was killed in action September 16. 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia.
